1942 Repunched Mintmark RPM-009

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista under die tracking codes UVC-018 and DMR-013, the 1942 Wartime Jefferson Nickel RPM-009 is a P/P West repunched mintmark variety — one of a substantial population of RPM varieties known for the wartime five-cent series. As a 1942 wartime nickel, this coin was struck in a 35% silver alloy (with copper and manganese), and the large P mintmark was placed above Monticello on the reverse rather than in the usual obverse position, a placement used specifically for the wartime composition to allow rapid identification of silver pieces. The large mintmark format actually makes repunching more visually accessible than on earlier Jefferson nickels: the westward ghost impression of the earlier strike sits adjacent to the final mintmark position and is resolvable at 5x magnification on problem-free specimens. RPM-009 progresses through three die stages. The reverse die is noted as a companion to DDR-003 for this issue. A thorough attribution includes confirming the westward secondary impression and cross-referencing the companion reverse variety.
