1942 Repunched Mintmark RPM-008
Error
Description
Cross-referenced as Fivaz-Stanton FS-501, this 1942 Philadelphia Jefferson nickel from the wartime silver alloy series carries RPM-008 as designated by VarietyVista, with universal variety code UVC-017 and die marriage record DMR-012. The variety shows a P/P displacement to the east, where the secondary large P mintmark impression sits to the right of the primary punch above Monticello's dome. Three die stages have been documented. Stage A in early die state carries unconfirmed markers. Stage B at mid-die state is likewise unconfirmed. By Stage C in late die state, a die crack extends from the right dome southward between pillars three and four, and another die crack has appeared in the upper hair on the obverse. The 1942-P wartime nickel holds a special place in Jefferson nickel collecting as the first issue to carry the large P mintmark above Monticello, introduced to distinguish the emergency 35% silver alloy from standard copper-nickel strikes. Its FS-501 cross-reference in the Cherrypickers' Guide confirms this as a recognized variety worth searching for among wartime silver nickel rolls.
