1942 Repunched Mintmark RPM-005

Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this first-year wartime silver Jefferson Nickel from the Philadelphia Mint carries the inaugural oversized P mintmark, introduced in 1942 to differentiate the 35% silver emergency alloy from standard copper-nickel issues. Die markers UVC-142 / DMR-009: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with two die scratches on either side of the I of PLURIBUS running south to the dome at MDS and obverse at MDS; Stage C with die scratches worn away at MDS and obverse at LDS. The gradual disappearance of the die scratches from Stage B to Stage C documents how continued die service abrades surface imperfections. Composed of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, this inaugural wartime issue saw massive Philadelphia production.
