Description
Leading the RPM catalog for the inaugural 1942-P wartime Jefferson Nickel, RPM-001 features a P/P/P/P quadruple-punched mintmark with displacements to West, West, and South, documented by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-010 / DMR-005. Four separate P punch contacts at varying positions produced one of the most complex RPM patterns in the wartime nickel series. Three stages: Stage A with reverse and obverse at EDS; Stage B with both at MDS; Stage C with both at LDS. The very low UVC number (010) confirms this was among the earliest documented die pairs. Composed of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese, weighing 5.0 grams with a 21.21 mm diameter. The 1942-P wartime nickel was the first American coin to bear a P mintmark, introduced so the public could distinguish silver-content coins from standard issues.
