1942-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-005

Description

A D/D Southeast variety, this VarietyVista-documented 1942-D Washington Silver Quarter features extensive Stage C die cracking that pervades nearly every design element on both faces. Die markers UVC-0270 / DMR-021: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B at MDS (unconfirmed); Stage C with die crack from E of EPU down the eagle's wing at LDS, die crack from BUS of PLURIBUS down the eagle's wing, die crack across the bow, die crack east from the eagle's head, die crack across bust at LDS, and die crack across the forehead and hair into the field under T of LIBERTY. Six simultaneous die cracks spanning inscriptions, eagle, bust, and portrait at Stage C document catastrophic late-life structural failure. Designed by John Flanagan, struck at Denver in 90% silver and 10% copper at 6.25 grams and 24.3 mm during wartime production when die replacement schedules were stretched.
