1942-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

Struck on a 90% silver planchet during the penultimate year before the wartime silver composition changed Jefferson Nickel production, the 1942-D Washington Quarter carries one of the more frequently referenced repunched mintmark varieties for that date: RPM-001, identified by a southward repunch of the D mintmark. The Washington Quarter's mintmark placement below the eagle's tail on the reverse was hand-punched through this era, making repunched mintmarks a recurring feature of close die examination. Die markers are cross-referenced as UVC-0266 and DMR-017. Stage A was early die state (unconfirmed). By Stage B (mid-die state), a die crack had developed down the eagle's right wing and a second die crack crossed the bust. Stage C was late die state (unconfirmed). The die crack progression documented across stages indicates this was a well-used die that progressed through a full life cycle, making stage-specific examples useful for dating die state within the same RPM attribution.
