Description

One of the most remarkable varieties in the Mercury Dime series, the 1942-D RPM-012 is a triple-punched mintmark — designated D/D/D — with both secondary impressions displaced south. The die technician punched the D into the working die three separate times, each leaving a distinct impression, with both earlier attempts below the final mintmark. Triple repunchings are significantly scarcer than standard D/D varieties because they require three identifiable impressions, both sufficiently separated from the primary to be individually distinguishable. The southward displacement creates a stacked effect beneath the primary — under magnification, two distinct secondary outlines extend downward, one potentially further south than the other, recording the sequential positioning progression. The 1942-D already stands as one of the most RPM-rich dates in the series, and RPM-012's triple status elevates it to a category occupied by very few Mercury Dime varieties. Struck at Denver in 90% silver during the first full year of American involvement in World War II, this 17.9mm dime carries Weinman's iconic designs. Look for two distinct secondary D impressions below the primary, both southward.
