1942-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-009

Description

Due-east displacement characterizes RPM-009 of the 1942-D Mercury Dime — the secondary D sits directly right of the primary, a purely lateral shift without vertical offset. Eastward repunchings manifest as extra width on the right side of the letter: the vertical stroke may appear doubled, or a faint secondary curve may extend beyond the right edge. This purely horizontal misalignment suggests the punch slid laterally before the corrective strike, a motion consistent with being bumped sideways rather than a typical repositioning that often combines both horizontal and vertical adjustment. As the ninth RPM for the 1942-D, this entry falls in the middle of the long catalog making this date a benchmark for Mercury Dime RPM collecting. Denver's wartime production consumed working dies at an accelerated pace, each receiving its D through the manual process used since the facility began operations in 1906. Weinman's Winged Liberty Head obverse and fasces reverse were struck in 90% silver at 17.9mm. The mintmark resides near the base of the fasces on the reverse. Look for the rightward extension of the D to confirm this east-displaced variety.
