Documented by VarietyVista with die marker codes UVC-109 and DMR-002, the 1942-D Lincoln Wheat Cent RPM-001 holds the primary catalog position among all repunched mintmark varieties for the 1942-D date-mint combination — typically indicating it was either the first documented or the most prominent D/D variety identified for the year. Three die stages are documented: Stage A in early die state (EDS), unconfirmed; Stage B with both obverse and reverse at mid-die-state (MDS); and Stage C at late die state (LDS), also unconfirmed. The MDS confirmation for Stage B provides the reference condition for the typical specimen, with the die markers at DMR-002 documenting the second marker set in the VarietyVista die marker reference catalog for this variety. The 1942-D Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck at the Denver Mint in the year before the wartime composition change to zinc-coated steel, using the standard bronze alloy of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc at 3.11 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. The Denver Mint applied its D mintmark to each working die through a manual punch-and-hammer process, and the RPM-001 designation for this date suggests this was a particularly well-documented or visually prominent repunch among the multiple D/D varieties produced in 1942.
