1942-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002
Error
Description
WDDO-002 on the 1942-D Lincoln Wheat Cent shows a Class V clockwise spread from a pivot at approximately 1 o'clock, producing spread on LIBERTY with the date slightly spread toward the center. Die markers: Obverse shows two parallel die scratches running northeast from the field near the top of the forehead. Cross-references: CONECA 2-O-V; Crawford CDDO-001; Coppercoins 1942D-1DO-001; Wexler Variety ID: 1942-D 1¢ WDDO-002. Four independent cross-references — CONECA, Crawford, Coppercoins, and Wexler — make this one of the most thoroughly catalogued doubled die obverse varieties for the 1942-D Lincoln Wheat Cent. Denver Mint cents of 1942 were struck in the standard 95% copper alloy. The 1942 date holds collector interest as the final full year before the zinc-coated steel cents of 1943, giving DDO varieties from this date added historical resonance. The Class V CW mechanism produces a rotational arc, and the LIBERTY spread with slight date movement is the primary obverse diagnostic for WDDO-002. Die Markers: Obverse: Two parallel die scratches run from north to south to the right of the bowtie. A die clash can be found to the right of the front of the throat and another to the left of the back of the neck. A die gouge can be found at the rim above the O in GOD. Reverse: A small die gouge (dot) can be found inside the upper C in CENT. A short die gouge extends NNE from the upper right 2nd A in AMERICA.
