1942-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-005

Description

Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1942-D 1¢ WRPM-005, cross-referenced as CONECA RPM #5 and Coppercoins 1942D-1MM-005, this Denver Lincoln wheat cent documents two obverse and two reverse stages. Obverse Stage A shows parallel scratches between IN and GOD plus a scratch from the bottom of G in GOD. By Stage B, a die gouge dot appears below B in LIBERTY while the IN-GOD scratches disappear, indicating die polishing between states. Reverse Stage A presents a short gouge north from the D in UNITED, a wavy scratch above the right wheat stem, and numerous north-south scratches throughout. Reverse Stage B maintains Stage A markers unchanged. The disappearance of obverse scratches while reverse markers persist suggests selective obverse die maintenance. Collectors should note that the LIBERTY B gouge dot in Stage B provides the most reliable quick diagnostic for later die state specimens. Obverse Stage A: Die Markers: Obverse Stage A: Parallel die scratches run from SW to NE between IN and GOD. A die scratch runs ESE from the bottom of the G in GOD. The Stage A die scratches between IN and GOD are no longer visible. A wavy die scratch can be found above the right wheat stem running not quite parallel to the right wheat stem. Numerous die scratches run from north to south throughout the reverse.
