1942-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-013

Description

Attributed by VarietyVista under die codes UVC-1196 and DMR-021, the 1942-D Lincoln Wheat Cent RPM-013 is a D/D Southeast repunched mintmark variety struck in 95% bronze at Denver. The series ran from 1909 through 1958; 1942 was one of the final years of bronze production before the wartime steel cent of 1943. The repunch places the first mintmark punch southeast of the final position — visible under magnification as a displaced D shadow to the lower right of the primary mintmark. Three die stages are documented: Stage A (early die state, unconfirmed) exhibits a die scratch running southwest between the 9 of the date and the mintmark, with the reverse also in early state. Stage B (mid die state, unconfirmed) is not yet fully characterized. Stage C is a late die state (unconfirmed). The Stage A obverse die scratch between the date and mintmark is the most useful early confirmation marker. Collectors scanning 1942-D Lincoln cents should focus on the mintmark area for the southeast-displaced serif of the earlier punch while noting the date-to-mintmark scratch as a die-state anchor.
