Description

Anchoring the DDO catalog for the 1942 Denver Mint Jefferson Nickel, DDO-001 presents medium spread on LIBERTY, the five-pointed star, and the date, documented through die markers UVC-1874 and DMR-008. This coin was struck in the standard copper-nickel composition (75% copper, 25% nickel) — not the wartime silver alloy. While San Francisco and Philadelphia both transitioned to the 35% silver composition partway through 1942, the Denver Mint also produced standard copper-nickel nickels before the changeover. The absence of the large mintmark above Monticello's dome confirms regular composition, as wartime silver issues display the oversized D above the dome rather than the small D to the right of the building. Medium spread indicates clearly distinguishable secondary images on the three primary obverse elements, making DDO-001 one of the more visually accessible varieties for the date.
