Description
Documented by VarietyVista, this San Francisco Mint Washington Silver Quarter carries an S/S East repunched mintmark where the initial punch landed slightly west of its intended position before the corrective second application. Die markers UVC-0216 / DMR-012 track three progressive stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with reverse at MDS, a die crack across forehead and hair at MDS, a die crack across bust, and die scratches North-South on obverse; Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The Stage B die crack traversing Washington's portrait from forehead through hair documents advancing structural fatigue at mid-life. Specimens are needed for new high-magnification color digital photographs per the cataloger. Designed by John Flanagan, struck in 90% silver and 10% copper at 6.25 grams and 24.3 mm, the 1941-S is a pre-war issue from the silver quarter era.
