1941-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001
ErrorDescription
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1941-S 25¢ WDDO-001, this Washington Silver Quarter features a very close counterclockwise spread on the ERTY of LIBERTY — a tight rotational displacement where the secondary hub impression is rotated slightly CCW relative to the primary, with the visible doubling concentrated on the rightmost letters of LIBERTY because their position on the die maximizes the angular separation at that distance from the rotation's pivot point. A die gouge protruding from the left side of the R in LIBERTY serves as the primary obverse die marker. Notably, the reverse of this die pair is also a doubled die, listed separately in the Wexler files as 1941-S 25¢ WDDR-001, creating a combination variety where both sides of the coin exhibit hub doubling from their respective die hubbing events. The reverse doubling shows strong extra thickness on USA, EPU, QUARTER DOLLAR, the eagle's head, and the lower leaves and branch ends, accompanied by a die crack running down the eagle's right wing to the Q in QUARTER. This dual DDO/DDR combination substantially enhances the numismatic significance and collector desirability of the variety. The 1941-S Washington Quarter was struck at the San Francisco Mint in 90% silver composition weighing 6.25 grams with a 24.26 mm diameter. John Flanagan's design depicts George Washington on the obverse after Houdon's famous bust. The San Francisco Mint's 1941 quarter production preceded American entry into World War II by months, and the combination of obverse and reverse hub doubling from independent die manufacturing events on a single die pair represents an uncommon convergence that variety collectors prize.
