1941-S Repunched Mintmark WRPM-013

Description

Documented as the thirteenth repunched mintmark variety for the 1941-S Lincoln Wheat Cent, WRPM-013 represents the kind of positional error that was common when mint marks were hand-punched into individual working dies. Before 1990, each working die received its mint mark through a separate manual process, and slight misalignment between initial and corrective punches created the doubled or shifted impressions that collectors now prize. The 1941-S was produced at the San Francisco Mint in substantial quantities as wartime demand increased circulating coinage needs. A higher grade specimen of this variety is needed to obtain better photographs and more thoroughly document the diagnostic characteristics.
