1941-S Repunched Mintmark WRPM-010

Description

Displaying an S/S Northwest orientation, the 1941-S Lincoln Wheat Cent WRPM-010 preserves a secondary mintmark impression positioned northwest of the primary S — evidence that the mintmark punch was applied twice to the working die with a directional shift between strikes. This triple-cross-referenced variety carries designations from CONECA (RPM #10), Coppercoins (1941S-1MM-010), and Wexler (Variety ID 1941-S 1¢ WRPM-010). The die exhibits a large S mintmark and multiple distinctive markers: on the obverse, a light die scratch runs south-southwest from the bottom of the 4 in the date, and two parallel die scratches run northwest to southeast left of the upper collar. The reverse carries die scratches running south-southwest to north-northeast below the left side of the E in ONE, plus a die gouge appearing as a dot south of the second A in AMERICA. Before 1990, mintmarks were individually hand-punched onto working dies at the branch mints, making repunched mintmarks a natural byproduct of this manual process. The abundant die markers on WRPM-010 make it one of the more readily attributable RPMs in the 1941-S cent series.
