Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista under codes UVC-1069 and DMR-014, the 1941-S Wheat Cent RPM-012 is a S/S West repunched mintmark in which a secondary S impression sits to the west of the primary mintmark. West-displaced repunchings on S-mint wheat cents are among the more common directional categories, resulting from the engraver shifting the punch slightly to the right before the final strike, leaving the earlier westward ghost visible at the left edge of the primary mintmark serif and ball. The variety progresses through three documented die stages. Stage A (EDS) is confirmed on both obverse and reverse faces, establishing the early die state as attributable. Stage B (MDS) is unconfirmed pending additional specimens. Stage C (LDS) is unconfirmed. The 1941-S Wheat Cent was produced at the San Francisco Mint in the year before American entry into World War II; the prewar cents of 1941 represent the final issue before the dramatic composition changes of 1942 and 1943.
