1941-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-011

Description

Cataloged as UVC-1038, DMR-013, this 1941 San Francisco Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent displays a repunched mintmark with the S/S positioned to the Northwest. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A is EDS (unconfirmed), Stage B shows obverse and reverse in MDS, and Stage C is LDS (unconfirmed). The S/S Northwest repunch reveals that the initial S punch landed slightly southeast of the intended location. Struck in 95% copper at the San Francisco Mint in the final year before the United States entered World War II, the 1941-S Wheat Cent saw healthy production volumes as wartime mobilization ramped up demand for circulating coinage. Within a year, wartime metal conservation would alter cent composition, first to zinc-coated steel in 1943 and then to shell-case copper in 1944. RPM-011 is among thirteen cataloged repunched mintmark varieties for the 1941-S date, reflecting the large number of working dies required for that year's production run at San Francisco.
