Description

Showing an S/S South repunched mintmark, this 1941-S Jefferson Nickel WRPM-002 preserves evidence of the mintmark punch being applied twice with the second impression displaced to the south. Obverse die markers include a NNW/SSE die crack running through the hair on the upper back of the head, along with a die crack running northeast from the rim at 6:00 into the lower bust and then curving ESE. On the reverse, a die scratch runs northeast from the bottom of the E to the R in AMERICA, and die scratches run from NW to SE on both sides of the lower T in UNITED. Cross-referenced as 1941-S 5¢ WRPM-002 and attributed by the Wexler Team. The multiple die cracks on the obverse, particularly the one that enters the bust from the rim and curves through the lower portrait, provide strong secondary diagnostics beyond the repunched mintmark itself. These crack patterns help confirm attribution even on specimens where the mintmark area may show wear that partially obscures the repunching evidence.
