1941-S Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003

Description

Exhibiting Class V (Pivoted Hub Doubling) with a clockwise spread, the 1941-S Jefferson Nickel WDDR-003 displays doubling on E PLURIBUS UNUM, STATES OF AMERICA, and the right side of the Monticello building, with extremely close doubling showing on CENTS and the LLO of MONTICELLO. Class V pivoted doubling occurs when the hub rotates around a fixed point during the hubbing process, producing spread that increases with distance from the pivot center — which explains why the inscriptions near the rim show wider displacement than the centrally located building details. Die markers on the reverse include a die gouge (dot) inside the lower left portion of the M in AMERICA, a diagonal die gouge from the rim above the N of UNUM, and notably a small S mintmark which itself is S/S East — indicating the mintmark was also repunched, giving this coin a dual variety status of DDR plus RPM. No obverse die markers have been noted. The 1941-S Jefferson Nickel was struck at the San Francisco Mint in standard copper-nickel composition (75% Cu, 25% Ni) at 5.0 grams and 21.2 mm diameter, one year before the switch to wartime silver alloy. Felix Schlag's design provides both the obverse portrait of Thomas Jefferson and the Monticello reverse where the pivoted doubling manifests across the building's architectural details and surrounding inscriptions.
