Description
Cross-referenced as Fivaz-Stanton FS-502, this 1941-S Jefferson Nickel displays an S/S South displacement using MMS-002 (Large mintmark), documented by VarietyVista. Die markers UVC-009 / DMR-004 track three stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with several small die gouges near the rim at K-3 at MDS and obverse at MDS; Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The FS-502 listing validates this as an actively sought Cherrypickers' Guide variety. The Large mintmark punch identification (MMS-002) documents which physical S punch was in service at San Francisco during 1941. Composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the 1941-S represents the final pre-war San Francisco Jefferson Nickel before the wartime silver alloy was introduced in mid-1942, fundamentally altering the composition and mintmark conventions of the series.
