1941 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-010
Error
Description
A light spread on the 19 of the date and across IN GOD WE TRUST characterizes DDO-010 on the 1941 Philadelphia Washington Quarter. The Washington Quarter entered production in 1932 on 90% silver planchets and would remain in that composition through 1964; the 1941 issue was struck during a period of high production as the United States prepared for wartime demands on the metals supply. The doubling on this obverse die is subtle in extent, classifying it among the lighter Washington Quarter doubled dies of the early series, yet the separation is sufficient to confirm a genuine hubbing misalignment. Die markers are cross-referenced as UVC-0162 and DMR-012. Stage A was early die state (unconfirmed). Stage B (mid-die state) shows a light die crack in the upper hair, a light die crack across the bust, and a mid-die state reverse. At Stage C, the obverse reached late die state with a die crack running from the eagle's right wing to the Q of QUARTER — a die crack path also noted in the comments field and consistent with the stress fracture patterns common to Washington Quarter obverse dies of this era.
