1941-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-010

Description

Documented by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-0195 and DMR-011, DDO-010 on the 1941-D Washington Quarter exhibits medium spread on LIBERTY of John Flanagan's Washington portrait obverse. Three die stages are tracked: Stage A (Early Die State) shows the obverse in EDS with a light die gouge through the upper left M of AMERICA on the reverse; Stage B shows both obverse and reverse in Mid Die State; Stage C (Late Die State) remains unconfirmed. The presence of a reverse die marker (the M of AMERICA gouge) in the Stage A description, despite this being an obverse variety, reflects the standard practice of documenting both sides of the coin at each die stage to assist with complete die pair identification. The medium spread on LIBERTY — one of the most prominently positioned inscriptions on Flanagan's obverse, arcing above Washington's head near the rim — makes this variety relatively accessible for cherrypickers because LIBERTY's large, well-spaced letters provide clear doubling diagnostics when examined under magnification. The 1941-D Washington Quarter was struck at the Denver Mint in 90% silver and 10% copper, weighing 6.25 grams with a diameter of 24.3 mm, during the final pre-war year before the United States entered World War II in December 1941. The tenth DDO catalog position indicates significant variety activity across the 1941-D quarter die population. The light die gouge through the M of AMERICA in EDS provides a valuable early-die-state authentication marker, while collectors encountering MDS specimens should verify the die identity through the doubling characteristics alone since the gouge may have worn.
