1941-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-006

Description

Carrying the VarietyVista die reference pair UVC-0191 / DMR-007, this 1941-D Washington Silver Quarter DDO-006 shows medium extra thickness on LIBERTY, IN, and TR of TRUST — a doubling pattern concentrated on the obverse inscriptions near Washington's portrait where the hub displacement produced visible thickening of the affected letter forms. Three documented die stages reveal progressive die deterioration: Stage A with both obverse and reverse in early-to-mid die state (EMDS); Stage B in mid-die-state (MDS) with a die crack running across the bust and into the field behind the queue (Washington's ponytail), plus a die crack running down the eagle's right wing on the reverse; and Stage C in late die state (LDS, unconfirmed). The Stage B die crack across the bust into the field behind the queue is a particularly significant attribution marker because its path from the high-relief bust area through the open field creates a visible fracture line against the coin's background surface, easily identified under modest magnification. The Washington Quarter was designed by John Flanagan, struck at the Denver Mint in 1941 in 90% silver composition (90% silver, 10% copper) weighing 6.25 grams with a 24.26 mm diameter. The 1941-D was produced just months before the United States entered World War II following the Pearl Harbor attack in December 1941. The medium extra thickness on LIBERTY and portions of IN GOD WE TRUST indicates a hub displacement that preferentially affected the inscription zone across the upper obverse, with the doubling manifesting as thickened letter strokes rather than clearly separated secondary images — a characteristic of close hub displacement where the magnitude of offset produces overlap rather than full separation between primary and secondary impressions.
