Description

Fifth documented repunched mintmark for the 1941-D Mercury Dime, RPM-005 displays a D/D East displacement where the Denver mintmark was initially punched slightly to the east of its intended position before receiving a corrective second impression. The five RPMs cataloged for the 1941-D date reflect the pre-war production environment at the Denver Mint, where each working die received its mintmark through individual hand-punching — a fundamentally manual process that ensured positional variation across the die population. Denver struck 45,634,000 Mercury Dimes in 1941, the highest D-mint Mercury Dime output of the series, a pre-war production surge driven by the expanding defense economy and rising transactional demand. Adolph A. Weinman's iconic design, featuring the winged cap of Liberty on the obverse and the Roman fasces bound with olive branches on the reverse, had been in continuous production since 1916, giving Mint workers a quarter-century of familiarity with the design's die preparation requirements.
