1941-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-002
Error
Description
Second in the DDO catalog for the 1941-D Mercury Dime, DDO-002 presents light spread on the designer's initials AW, the date, and TRUST — elements across the lower portion of Adolph Weinman's obverse. The AW initials at Liberty's neck truncation are among the smallest features on the Mercury Dime, making them a particularly diagnostic pickup point where even light doubling produces visible thickening. Cross-referenced as 2-O-II-C in the CONECA classification — variety 2, obverse, Class II distorted hub doubling with counterclockwise spread. Class II doubling creates lateral displacement without rotation, producing uniform directional shift rather than the graduated spread of pivoted varieties. Die markers UVC-132 and DMR-005 confirm the working die. The 1941-D Mercury Dime was struck at the Denver Mint in 90% silver at 2.5 grams during the final pre-war year of the Winged Liberty Head series. Target the AW initials and date under 7x to 10x magnification, where light Class II displacement produces subtle but consistent thickening.
