1940-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

Holding the primary catalog position for the 1940-S date, this VarietyVista-documented Washington Silver Quarter bears an S/S/S North, Southeast triple-punched mintmark, indicating at least three separate punch applications. Die markers UVC-0150 / DMR-008 track four stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with a die crack down eagle's left wing to bottom tip at MDS and obverse at MDS; Stage C with die cracks down eagle's left wing, down eagle's right wing through QU of QUARTER, across branches, and through upper hair at LDS; Stage D with a die crack east from back of eagle's head at VLDS and obverse at VLDS. The four-stage progression from EDS through VLDS documents an extended die life. Designed by John Flanagan, struck at San Francisco in 90% silver and 10% copper at 6.25 grams and 24.3 mm during the pre-war production period.
