Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team under Variety ID 1940-S 25-cent WDDO-002, this San Francisco Mint Washington Quarter displays eastward spread on IN GOD WE TRUST. The obverse progresses through two stages: Stage A shows numerous horizontal scratches through the vertical bar of L in LIBERTY plus a die crack across the base of the bust into the lower ribbon; Stage B exhibits parallel die scratches southwest from the bottom of E in LIBERTY and another scratch east-southeast from the bottom of Y. The reverse carries a die crack descending the right wing extending to the upper left Q in QUARTER, plus a crack through the US of PLURIBUS and down the upper half of the eagle's left wing. No cross-references to other attribution systems are currently known. San Francisco produced Washington Quarters from 1932 onward, and doubled die obverses from the pre-war era are less commonly documented than mid-century counterparts. The eastward spread on IN GOD WE TRUST requires magnification to confirm, as this class of hub doubling produces close separation between primary and secondary images. Reverse: None significant.Submitted By: John A.
