Description

Notable for its die marriage with a repunched mintmark, the 1940-S Mercury Dime WDDO-007 shows a close spread toward the center on the date. The reverse mintmark is itself an RPM variety listed in the Wexler RPM Files as 1940-S 10¢ WRPM-004, displaying an S/S West displacement. This pairing means collectors who locate the doubled die obverse automatically hold the repunched mintmark variety on the same coin. The obverse carries a feeder finger abrasion to the right of the upper B in LIBERTY, an artifact caused by the mechanical coin-feeding mechanism contacting the die surface, along with a north-south die crack running through the back of the profile and the front of Liberty's hair. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 1940-S 10¢ WDDO-007, this San Francisco regular strike represents an appealing two-variety coin from the final years of the Mercury Dime series, which would end in 1945 when the Roosevelt Dime took its place. The convergence of DDO and RPM on a single die pair elevates the collecting interest considerably.
