1940-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-006

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1940-S 10¢ WDDO-006, this San Francisco Mercury dime displays a close spread directed toward the center that is visible on the date, the designer's initials, and slightly on IN GOD WE TRUST. A small die gouge to the left of the upper T in LIBERTY serves as the obverse die marker. The reverse of this same die pairing is itself a doubled die listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1940-S 10¢ WDDR-003, making this a scarce dual-doubled-die coin. On the reverse, a spread toward the center shows on the top of the axe and fasces, STATES OF AMERICA, the upper leaves below OF, the right star, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the word DIME. Parallel die scratches run from northwest to southeast between the E in ONE and the mintmark, and numerous north-south die scratches appear throughout the reverse. The convergence of both an obverse and reverse doubled die on a single Mercury dime die pair is uncommon and elevates the collectibility of this variety beyond what either doubling alone would command.
