1940-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003
Error
Description
One of the scarcer Mercury Dime doubled dies, this San Francisco Mint variety shows spread towards center on the date — a doubling direction that compresses the digits inward rather than expanding them. The obverse carries a die crack running north from the top of the throat behind the chin, extending to the rim left of the E in LIBERTY. Die clash marks from the olive leaves are visible around the nose area, though heavy die abrading has partially obscured them. The reverse is equally significant: it has been separately cataloged as WDDR-002, exhibiting spread towards center on STATES OF AMERICA, the upper leaves below OF, the right star, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and DIME. A die gouge at the rim above the O in OF serves as a reverse die marker, while die clash marks appear at the leaves below AME in AMERICA and above ON of ONE. This dual designation — WDDO-003 on the obverse and WDDR-002 on the reverse — means both sides of the coin carry independently cataloged doubled die varieties, a combination that significantly enhances collector appeal.
