1940-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

A spread towards the center shows on the date, the designer’s initials, and IGWT. Die Markers: Obverse Stage A: A die crack runs NNE from the rim at about 6:30 into the base of the bust and then curves north well into the neck. Obverse Stage B: Two parallel die gouges run through the die crack on the base of the bust. A die gouge can be found to the right of the top of the E in WE. A die clash mark extends SSW from the underside of the chin. Die clash marks protrude from the upper back of the neck. A die crack runs from SSW to NNE through the left side of the wing and out to the rim. The bridge of the nose is broken from die abrasions to remove die clash marks. Reverse Stage A: The reverse is a doubled die listed as 1940-S 10¢ WDDR-001. A spread towards the center shows on STATES OF, the top of the fasces, the upper leaves, and the top right branches. Mechanical doubling could be found on many of the leaves in the middle of the right side. Reverse Stage B: A heavy die scratch curves through the upper IT of UNITED. Numerous abrasion die scratches run mostly from SSW to NNE on both side of the fasces. Die clash remnants can be seen running through the outer leaves on the lower left. Obverse Stage A:
