1940-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-005

Description

DDO-005 on the 1940 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent shows light extra thickness on the date, LIBERTY, and WE TRUST — designated as Class IV Offset Hub Doubling. Die markers: UVC-1464 and DMR-017. Stage A is early die state (unconfirmed). Stage B is middle die state (unconfirmed). Stage C — the confirmed die state — shows a die crack from the rim through the O of ONE on the reverse, a late die state marker. I-code markers: I-2, extra 1 to right of the 1 of the date; I-2, extra 9 to right of the 9 of the date. VarietyVista cross-reference: DDO-005. The doubling on the individual date digits — visible as secondary impressions to the right of both the 1 and the 9 — provides specific I-code confirmation beyond the general extra thickness on LIBERTY and the motto.
