Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this 1940-S Lincoln Wheat Cent DDO-003 displays light hub doubling spread on the 40 of the date, with very light additional spread on TRUST in the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. The light-to-very-light doubling intensity means the secondary impressions are subtle and require careful examination under magnification, with the 40 digits offering the strongest diagnostic. Die stage progression is tracked under UVC-1462 and DMR-015: Stage A is an unconfirmed early die state, Stage B shows both the obverse and reverse at mid-die state (MDS), and Stage C is an unconfirmed late die state. The confirmed MDS at Stage B establishes the middle portion of this die's service life, while the unconfirmed early and late stages await additional specimens to verify the die condition at those points. San Francisco Wheat Cents from 1940 had production volumes significantly lower than Philadelphia, making all S-mint varieties from this year comparatively harder to locate in the marketplace. Light-spread doubled die varieties like DDO-003 present an attribution challenge because the subtle secondary impressions can be confused with strike doubling or machine doubling — flat, shelf-like displacement that lacks the rounded profile of genuine hub doubling. Collectors should examine the 40 digits and the TRUST lettering under magnification, looking for the rounded secondary impressions characteristic of true hub doubling.
