1940 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002
ErrorDescription
Exhibiting extra thickness across multiple reverse legend elements, the 1940 Washington Quarter WDDR-002 shows hub doubling on USA, E PLURIBUS UNUM (EPU), QUARTER DOLLAR, and the olive and laurel branch ends on John Flanagan's reverse design. The breadth of affected elements — spanning both the inscriptions and botanical design features — indicates a substantial hub displacement affecting a wide zone of the reverse die face. An obverse die gouge just to the left of the top of the Y in LIBERTY provides an identification marker linking this reverse to its specific obverse die pairing, though no significant reverse markers have been noted beyond the doubling itself. Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1940 25c WDDR-002, this Philadelphia Mint issue was struck in 90% silver at 6.25 grams during the early years of World War II-era coinage — silver Washington Quarters would continue in this composition through 1964. The 1940-P quarter had a mintage of 35,715,246, a healthy production figure that nonetheless generated relatively few documented doubled die varieties. Examine USA, EPU, QUARTER DOLLAR, and the branch ends for the extra thickness from hub doubling, and confirm with the die gouge to the left of Y's top in LIBERTY on the obverse.
