1940 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-003
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-0127 with die-marriage reference DMR-015, this 1940 Philadelphia Washington Quarter doubled die reverse displays light spread on the lower letters of STATES OF AMERICA and on LLAR of DOLLAR. The distribution of doubling across the lower portions of multiple reverse legend elements indicates a hub-doubling event whose displacement geometry produced maximum visible spread in the lower design field. John Flanagan's Washington Quarter design, introduced in 1932, was in its ninth year of production when this die was prepared, and the 1940 issue was struck in the standard 90% silver composition that would continue through 1964. Three die stages document the die's working life: Stage A in early die state, Stage B with both reverse and obverse at mid-die state, and Stage C in late die state. Pre-war Washington Quarter doubled dies are relatively uncommon compared to the profusion of varieties documented for later dates, making DDR-003 a notable early-series entry. Collectors examining 1940 quarters should focus on the lower reverse legends, particularly LLAR in DOLLAR, where the light spread is most readily detectable under magnification.
