1940 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-007
Error
Description
Cross-referenced as CONECA 4-R-VI and possible Coppercoins 1940P-1DR-004, this Lincoln Wheat Cent WDDR-007 exhibits an unusual combination of two doubling classes on a single die. Extreme Class VI extra thickness shows on E PLURIBUS UNUM, the dots, both wheat ears and stems, ONE CENT, and AMERICA. Additionally, Class II separation lines appear on the upper E of ONE, the E of CENT, and the upper wheat ears, creating a dual-mechanism doubling effect. Obverse die markers include a die gouge well north of the 0 in the date. On the reverse, two die scratches run southwest from the P of PLURIBUS, and a die scratch extends from the top right of the right wheat ear northeast to the rim. The simultaneous presence of both Class VI thickness and Class II separation lines makes WDDR-007 diagnostically distinctive, as each class produces a characteristically different visual effect that experienced collectors can distinguish independently.
