1940 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-015
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-2582 and DMR-019, this 1940 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent doubled die reverse has been documented across three die stages. Stage A represents early die state with characteristics yet to be fully confirmed. Stage B, the most diagnostic stage, shows the reverse in late-to-mid die state with die gouges visible in the upper hair on the obverse — providing a reliable marker for attribution. Stage C captures the late die state, where additional deterioration features may appear. The presence of obverse die gouges in the upper hair region is particularly useful for collectors sorting through quantities of 1940 cents, as these incuse marks can be spotted under moderate magnification before even examining the reverse for doubling characteristics. Victor David Brenner's wheat stalk reverse, with its parallel lines forming the wheat ears and the inscriptions ONE CENT and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, offered multiple fine elements where hub displacement could produce detectable spread. Pre-war Philadelphia Mint cent production in 1940 was substantial, providing variety specialists with ample material for systematic searching.
