Description

Cataloged as DDR-014 for the 1940 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent, this doubled die reverse is a confirmed dual variety — the obverse is listed as DDO-004, meaning both sides carry doubled die characteristics from separate hub misalignment events. Light extra thickness appears on E PLURIBUS UNUM, upper wheat ears, stems, and AMERICA. Die markers under UVC-2515 and DMR-018 document three stages: Stage A shows a die gouge over LU of PLURIBUS at early-to-mid die state, with the obverse confirmed as DDO-004. Stage B reveals die cracks in the lower right wheat grains, a die crack through V.D.B. (designer Victor David Brenner's initials), and a die crack on the lower lapel at mid-die-state. Stage C is late die state but unconfirmed. The progressive accumulation of die cracks illustrates how striking pressure gradually deteriorated this die.
