1939 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-012

Description

Attributed by VarietyVista as DDO-012, this 1939 Washington Quarter variety shows a light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST. Washington Quarter doubled die obverses from the silver era attract consistent collector attention because the 90% silver composition adds intrinsic value even at lower grades. Die marker codes UVC-0097 and DMR-014 are assigned. Stage A is early die state (EDS, unconfirmed). Stage B is confirmed as middle die state (MDS) on both obverse and reverse. Stage C is late die state (LDS) and is identified by four progressive die cracks: across the upper hair, across the bust, down the eagle's right wing, and on the wing under AMER of AMERICA. The extensive Stage C cracking indicates a die continued in service well past ideal quality — not uncommon in late-1930s production priorities. Stage B coins offer the cleanest combination of visible doubling and confirmed die markers; Stage C examples are more dramatic but heavy cracking can obscure other detail.
