Description

The 1939 Washington Quarter DDO-006 is a doubled die obverse variety cataloged with die markers UVC-0091 and DMR-008, documented across three die stages. John Flanagan's Washington Quarter design carries IN GOD WE TRUST to the right of the portrait, and it is precisely that motto that serves as the primary doubling target on DDO-006, with a light spread visible across the full inscription. Stage A is early die state but unconfirmed. Stage B shows both obverse and reverse in mid-die state. Stage C introduces a constellation of die cracks that make attribution particularly straightforward: a light crack across the bust; a crack down the eagle's right wing; a crack east from the eagle's head toward the wing; and a light crack on the eagle's left wing. These Stage C wing and bust cracks — present on both sides of the coin — provide a secondary identification system especially valuable on worn examples where the IN GOD WE TRUST motto doubling has been softened. The IN GOD WE TRUST spread is the primary variety feature; the multiple Stage C die cracks offer independent confirmation on worn examples. The 1939 Washington Quarter was struck in 90% silver.
