1939 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-002

Description

DDO-002 of the 1939 Washington quarter exhibits light doubling spread on the 39 of the date. Cataloged under UVC-0087 and DMR-004, this variety is documented across three die stages. Stage A represents the early die state, which remains unconfirmed. Stage B is mid-die state on the obverse, characterized by a die crack from BUS of PLURIBUS to the wing, along with die scratches oriented east-to-west through QUARTER. Stage C is late die state, also unconfirmed. The die crack from PLURIBUS to the wing in Stage B is the most reliable die-state marker, and the east-west die scratches through QUARTER provide secondary confirmation on the reverse. The 1939 Washington quarter was struck at Philadelphia during the early years of the series, which debuted in 1932. DDO varieties from the pre-war Washington quarter era are less commonly encountered than those from later decades, as the lower mintages of the Depression and pre-war years resulted in fewer die pairs being placed into service. The light spread on 39 is the primary pickup point for attribution.
