1939 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-006

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team, WDDO-006 of the 1939 Lincoln wheat cent features a nicely doubled eyelid showing south below the primary eyelid, creating a clear secondary line that serves as the principal pickup point. Doubled eyelids on Lincoln cents are among the more visually accessible attribution features because the eye area is a natural focal point when examining a coin. Obverse die markers include three short east-west die scratches at the upper ear opening, two die scratches running southwest just below center on the back of the ear, and a series of northwest-southeast die scratches on the head above the eye. The reverse shows a die scratch running southeast from the lower right of the center bar of the E in ONE and a northwest-southeast die scratch on the lines of the right wheat ear near the top. Cross-referenced as Coppercoins 1939P-1DO-012 and Wexler Variety ID: 1939 1¢ WDDO-006. The 1939 wheat cent was produced at Philadelphia, and the concentration of die scratches around the ear and head region suggests this die received notable surface contact during production or handling.
