Description

An extra eyelid below Lincoln's primary eyelid is the key feature of this 1939 Philadelphia Lincoln Wheat cent obverse doubled die. Cross-referenced as Coppercoins 1939P-1DO-002 and catalogued as Wexler Variety ID 1939 1¢ WDDO-019, this is a replacement listing: the original WDDO-019 was delisted after being identified as a duplicate of WDDO-016. The specimen examined is in a later die state than the Coppercoins reference example, meaning the doubling is less easily seen than on the earlier-state examples that anchored the original attribution. Obverse die markers: several long die scratches running SSE from the nose and forehead; a die crack on the bust above the designer's initials; a light die crack in the upper hair from under the D in GOD to the W in WE. Reverse markers include crisscrossing die scratches confirming the die pair. The 1939 Philadelphia cent was struck in bronze with a mintage of approximately 316 million pieces. Collectors should note the replacement status and consult the Coppercoins cross-reference as a primary attribution framework.
