1939 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-006

Description

Strong extra eyelid North characterizes this 1939 Lincoln Wheat Cent doubled die obverse, one of the more visually distinctive DDOs from the late pre-war years. Collectors examining the obverse under magnification will find the eyelid doubling provides reliable attribution without requiring extensive die marker confirmation. Die tracking data includes UVC-1424 and DMR-008. Three documented die stages span the working life of this obverse die: Stage A represents the early die state and remains unconfirmed, while Stage B entered mid-die state with a die crack developing over V.D.B. along with a die chip to the right of V.D.B. and a reverse at MDS. Stage C reached late die state, also unconfirmed. By 1939, Philadelphia was producing Lincoln Cents in quantities exceeding 300 million, yet DDO-006 survived the sorting process infrequently enough to remain a noteworthy find for Wheat Cent variety specialists.
