Description

Struck during the inaugural year of Felix Schlag's Jefferson Nickel design, DDO-011 exhibits medium extra thickness on the date, the star, LIBERTY, and IN GOD WE TRUST — a broad-coverage pattern affecting nearly every obverse legend element. Medium classification indicates the secondary hub impression sits close enough to the primary that the doubling manifests as widened strokes rather than clearly separated images, requiring moderate magnification to confirm. As a first-year-of-issue variety, this die commands particular attention from Jefferson Nickel specialists who prize 1938 varieties for their historical significance as the design that replaced the Buffalo Nickel. Die markers include UVC-591 and DMR-013. Three die stages document the working life of this die pair: Stage A at Early Die State remains unconfirmed, Stage B places both obverse and reverse at Mid Die State, and Stage C at Late Die State is likewise unconfirmed.
