1937 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003

Description

Cross-referenced as CONECA 16-O-II-C, this 1937 Philadelphia Lincoln wheat cent exhibits a Class II spread toward the center on the letters of LIBERTY. Doubling on IN GOD WE TRUST and the date originates from the doubled working hub known for this date. John A. Wexler cataloged the variety under Wexler Variety ID 1937 1 cent WDDO-003. The obverse die carries extensive scratch diagnostics: a short strong die scratch running north from the back of the head just under GO of GOD, a die scratch running NNE from the beard ending in front of the lips, several short die scratches running northeast from the neck and bowtie, a strong die scratch running ESE from the arm just above the base of the bust, and a strong die scratch running southwest from the back of the head behind the ear. The reverse shows a curving die crack through the upper RIBU in PLURIBUS. The doubled working hub origin means that multiple die pairings may share the same IGWT and date doubling, with individual die scratches distinguishing WDDO-003 from sibling varieties produced by the same hub.
