1937-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-002
Error
Description
Denver struck over 40 million Lincoln Wheat Cents in 1937, the twenty-eighth year of Victor David Brenner's enduring design. DDR-002 preserves extra thickness on E PLURIBUS and both wheat ears — hub doubling created when the working die received misaligned impressions during its manufacture at the Philadelphia die shop. Die markers UVC-1392 and DMR-009 anchor the attribution across three documented stages: Stage A in Early Die State (EDS, unconfirmed), Stage B where the reverse reaches Mid-Die State with a diagnostic die crack developing over V.D.B. that signals the transition to Late Die State, and Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The V.D.B. die crack is a particularly useful attribution marker because it appears in a location unique to this die — the designer's initials at the base of the reverse, restored in 1918 after their controversial removal in 1909. Cataloged by VarietyVista, DDR-002 stands as a collectible piece of Depression-era Denver Mint production, where high output volumes and hundreds of working dies made hub misalignment events statistically inevitable.
