1936 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-017

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team as Wexler Variety ID 1936 1¢ WDDO-017, this doubled die obverse variety on the 1936 Lincoln Wheat cent shows an extra eyelid displaced southeast of the normal eyelid on Lincoln's eye. Die markers on the obverse include a die scratch running north from the center of the nose and numerous die scratches running east-west through GOD. Notably, the reverse of this coin also carries a doubled die, listed separately in the Wexler files as 1936 1¢ WDDR-003A. That reverse doubling shows a spread toward the center on EPU and the dots, increasing from left to right; strong doubling on the upper right wheat ear and the E in ONE; and a die scratch running south from the bottom of the second S in STATES. The pairing of a doubled die obverse with a doubled die reverse on the same coin, while unusual, is documented in the Lincoln cent series and makes this a particularly interesting attribution. The cross-reference field previously contained an artifact "s:;" prefix that has been removed from this record. The 1936 Lincoln Wheat cent is struck in 95% copper alloy. The southeast-displaced extra eyelid remains the primary identification anchor for WDDO-017.
